THE GAME’S PHYSICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL DEMANDS

 

A professional football player will typically have the following demands during a game:

·        Runs between 5-8 miles (8-13 km)

·        Exercises at a pace that represents 70-80% of their endurance capacity

·        Walks, sprints, jogs, cruises, stretches, jumps, passes, heads, tackles and shoots

·        Contact with the ball for 2-3 minutes

·        Turns some 400-450 times through 90 degrees or more

 

In general terms fitness is often referred to as being made up of four S’s, namely:

1.     Speed

2.     Strength

3.     Stamina (or cardiovascular endurance)

4.     Suppleness (or flexibility)
